Barley Stacks Wines is the first commercial vineyard and winery to be established on the traditional barley belt of the Yorke Peninsula, which is traditionally renowned for growing the world’s best malting barley.
The vineyard was established in 1996 with planting of Shiraz grapes. It then grew as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay were planted in 2000 and finally Viognier grapes planted in 2001.
The rich grey soil over limestone, which produces the famous barley, has also contributed to the production of premium quality fruit.
Watering of the vineyards using Partial Root Zone Drying (PRD), has allowed production of wines with great intensity that offer fullness of flavour and varietal fruit characters.
All wine produced at Barley Stacks Wines is made from grapes grown in our own vineyards, where it is also crushed, fermented, stored, bottled and distributed from our Cellar door and elsewhere.

Our Name
BarleyStacks Wines is named after an area of land adjoining the vineyard that was used to store bagged grain in large stacks. When the grain was ready to ship, it was transported to ports like Ardrossan and Wallaroo.

John Zilm
John studied Bachelor of Applied Science in Wine Science in 1986 from the Charles Stuart University in Wagga Wagga.
John has been working in the wine industry from 1980 and has worked at St Halletts Wines, Rockford, Basedow Wines and became the Sole Winemaker for Craneford Wines in 1996. He then purchased Craneford Wines in 1998 and sold the company in 2004 but continued to be their senior winemaker until 2006, which is the year he also became a 5 Star Winemaker for Craneford.
John has also been a consultant to several clients over the years.
John has won several trophies including gold, silver and bronze medals for all varieties of wines including Sparkling Red since 1997.
